The vibe, essentially, was “cool nebbish,” and Balaban helped invent it. ![]() ![]() He was a proto Rick Moranis-and Rick Moranis is now considered something of a sex symbol. But in his Harrington jacket and black glasses, he was a pioneer for a certain kind of nontraditional style that people find sexy. The scene was controversial by 1969 standards, so it’s understandable why people might forget Balaban looking like he’d just stepped out of the pages of Take Ivy. He’s worn a lot through his career-I can count the number of actors who made a career with four eyes on one hand, and few have done it as long as Balaban, dating as far back to his first movie role as the student who picks up Jon Voight’s Joe Buck for a quickie in a movie theater in Midnight Cowboy. And Balaban’s eyeglasses have been a big part of his whole thing as an actor. It’s about the way you carry yourself-and also the way you adorn yourself. “I basically do what my wife tells me to and I dress,” he says.
